WITSML SIG

The WITSML Special Interest Group (WITSML SIG) is the Energistics facilitated user community for drilling and completion standards and best practices. The leading Energistics industry standard in this area is WITSML.

WITSML Standards, in fact, have been extended for use in many other disciplines, either under the WITSML name or a specialized name, such as PRODML for Production.

Like all Energistics SIGs, this SIG is responsible to promote the use of existing standards and to recognize opportunities to enhance or develop standards.

The members of the WITSML SIG number over fifty organizations and represent oil companies, service companies, software product companies, and regulatory agencies. Both Energistics member organizations and non-member organizations are included.

This Web page is the Home page for the WITSML SIG. Historical, current, and planning information can be found on this page or on referenced pages. Much information is published for all. Some current technical information is restricted to SIG member organizations.

Please address interest, comments, or questions to info@energistics.org.

Public Seminars and Exhibitions

The WITSML SIG sponsors two public seminars and exhibitions per year -- one each in North American and Europe. These events are coupled with face-to-face meetings of the SIG working teams.

In 2006, these events were held in Houston, Texas and Aberdeen, Scotland and attracted over 200 attendees from all over the world.

The seminars feature detailed presentations from oil companies and service/software companies about current and planned activities in the drilling and completions area in the context of the WITSML Standards. Vendors demonstrate their current and under development products in the exhibitions.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is responsible for providing long term strategic direction for the development and promotion of WITSML.

Use Case and Implementation Support Team

The Use Case & Implementation Support (UC&IS) Team is responsible for identifying business use cases to be supported by WITSML and to clarify desired behavior by server and client software components.  The team evaluates future development opportunities and provides marketing and adoption support.

The UC&IS Team works through sub-teams defined to addrss specific topis or problem areas.  These include:

  • Geodetics/Trajectory
         - Consider how WITSML can best support geodetics and trajectory needs.
  • Server Profiles
          - Define a framework for defining profiles for types of WITSML Server components.
  • Performance and Testing
         -  Consider future requirements for high data density, images, wired pipe, wireline, compression, filtering, etc.
  • Take-up Improvement
         - How to increase adoption and implementatin of WITSML through improved faciliation, tools, public awareness, web site content, etc.
  • Production Enhancement
          - Define requirements for fracturing and stimulation services
  • Identification
          - Define requirements for data identification and organization on servers

    Technical Team

The Technical Team has responsibility for developing resolutions for technical issues revolving around the Data Schema Specification and the Application Programming (web service) Interface.
