Well Identity Standards Work Group

Global Unique Well Identifier Standards and Services

The current activities of this work group are focused on increasing industry awareness of the GUWI Standards and Services in order to encourage greater use of the GUWI identifiers especially for integating well/wellbore datasets.

The GUWI Standards and Services apply globally except for the U.S. and Canada. It is estimated that there are between 700,000 and 800,000 wells/wellbores altogether. Growth is estimated to be about 12,000 new wells/wellbores per year.

Nearly 620,000 wells/wellbores have GUWI identifiers assigned, which represents between 76% and 86% of the wells/wellbores.

The Work Group is working to refine the estimated totals and to identify countries for which there are the largest numbers of wells/wellbores that do not yet have GUWIs. In the future, the Work Group will engage with the government agencies and key operators in those countries to encourage getting the 'missing' wells/wellbores registered.

The Work Group wants to learn about experiences in the industry with integrating well/wellbore datasets, including experiences that illustrate how the existence of industry standard GUWIs helped improve the integration process.

Other activities planned for the Work Group include: improving the clarity and completeness of the definitions of the data attributes associated with well/wellbore records in the GUWI datasets and promoting the release of well/wellbore records for industry use by operators and government agencies.
