The Energistics Consortium, an affiliate of The Open Group®, has published the Energistics Unit of Measure Standard v1.0.1. To download it from The Open Group Library, click here.

The purpose of the Energistics Unit of Measure (UOM) Standard is to provide the necessary components and guidelines to improve accuracy and consistency of implementation, usage, exchange, and conversion of units of measure related to all upstream oil and gas activities.

The UOM Standard is a part of the Energistics Common Technical Architecture and used in all relevant Energistics standards, such as WITSML™, PRODML™, and RESQML™. Other industry groups and technologies use the standard, too, for example, The Open Group OSDU® Data Platform.

This latest version:

  • Adds a new unit required for a new property that was added to the latest version of the Practical Well Log Standard (PWLS) (For more information on PWLS, click here.)
  • Includes JSON resources (schemas, dictionary files, etc.) in addition to the XML resources

First published in 2014, The Energistics UOM Standard represents the collaborative work of the Energistics Consortium, its member community, the Professional Petroleum Data Management (PPDM™) Association, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) to update previous standards and best practices for use of units of measure used in the upstream oil and gas industry. (A detailed list of previous specifications and standards included in the UOM Standard are listed in the documentation in the download file.)

Accurate use, exchange, and conversion of units of measure in upstream oil and gas software are crucial. Errors in units of measure can cause serious problems for the accuracy and integrity of earth and reservoir models and the decisions that are based on those models.
